Organic Shopping Guide - The Most & Least Contaminated List


Whether you are on a budget and need to prioritize your organic purchases, or you would simply like to know which type of produce has the highest pesticide residue "The Dirty Dozen" and which do not "The Clean 15" the following guide from the Environmental Working Group (an organization of scientists, researchers and policymakers) will help.


The Dirty Dozen - The Most Contaminated:
  • Peaches
  • Apples
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Celery
  • Nectarines
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Domestic Blueberries
  • Imported Grapes
  • Spinach, Kale and Collard greens
  • Lettuce 
  • Potatoes
The Clean 15 - The Least Contaminated:
  • Onions
  • Avocados
  • Sweet corn
  • Pineapples
  • Mango
  • Sweet peas
  • Asparagus
  • Kiwi
  • Cabbage
  • Eggplant
  • Cantaloupe
  • Watermelon
  • Grapefruit
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Sweet onions

The lists of dirty and clean produce were compiled after the USDA washed the produce using high-power pressure water systems. The full list contains 49 types of produce, rated on a scale of least to most pesticide residue.
